Kenneth Josephson föddes 1932 i Detroit. Han började fotografera tidigt med familjens småbildskamera och 1960 examinerades han i fotografi vid the Illinois Institute of Design, där han studerade för Harry Callahan. Josephson, som kanske är mest känd för serierna Images within Images, tar ofta mediet självt som ämne och genom ett spel mellan verklighet och reproduktion kommenterar han fotografiets förhållande till sanning och illusion. 1972 mottog Kenneth Josephson ett Guggenheim stipendium.
