Info
The Study Gallery is based on an idea by Pontus Hultén, the director of Moderna Museet from 1960 to 1973. He saw the museum as a dynamic place in constant motion. He organised several exhibitions that explored the relationship between art, technology and man. The Study Gallery, completed in 2008, was created on Hultén’s initiative to make more works of art accessible to visitors. The pioneering architectural concept with the moving screens was developed by Hultén together with the Italian architect Renzo Piano.

The total of thirty screens are suspended from the ceiling and mechanically lowered at the touch of a button. This is done by a museum host, who can also explain what is shown on the various screens. At present, you can choose between more than twenty screens with some of the museum’s most appreciated works and others that are less well known. The screens are arranged with thematic links to ongoing Collection displays, or other projects at the museum, such as new acquisitions. A visit to The Study Gallery is a unique kind of art experience.
