- About the work
Ivan Aguéli was an artist, linguist, writer, anarchist and animal rights activist, who was born in Sala. He lived for many years in Egypt, where he studied religion and was initiated into a Sufi order. Sufism is a form of Muslim mysticism, which teaches that God is in everything and is everything.  Divine light is a central concept in Aguéli’s paintings, and the contrast between dark and light is evened out in his motifs.  In The City in the Hills, we can make out buildings on the horizon.  And yet, the painting is almost entirely abstract. Egyptian Domed House and Boats on the Nile were painted when the First World War broke out. The apparent tranquillity of these scenes is counteracted by the tension in the interplay of colour and form.
