- About the work
Woman with Blue Collar is often described as a portrait of the surrealist photograph Dora Maar. Picasso makes use here of the same method he and George Braque developed in Cubism: he shows us the woman from several different viewpoints simultaneously. The right half of her face turns itself toward the left one so that both ears are — impossibly—visible at the same time. The painting might portrait a split personality. One half of the face is characterized by bright colors, while the other is shrouded in darkness. Two women were close to Picasso during the time of its making, and it is not impossible that the painting in fact unites these two in a single picture.
