- About the work
In spring 1918, a number of Swedish volunteers fought in the Finnish civil war. When the fallen soldiers were returned to Sweden, a funeral procession was held in Stockholm in their honour. Gösta Adrian-Nilsson is one of many artists who depicted the event. Funeral processions were a common sight in Stockholm in the early 1900s. But GAN turns this into a current affair, urgent and political, not least in view of Sweden's neutrality policy. The dramatic effect is heightened by the bright colours that contrast against the dark background, and also by the movements of the procession. The schematic portrayal blends the military and religious rituals.
