- About the work
Vija Celmins was born in Latvia and moved to the USA as a child, after traumatic wartime experiences. In the 1960s, she became part of the Los Angeles young art scene that wanted to break away from tradition. They tried new, industrial materials or portrayed their experiences of light and space. Celmins bases her works on photographs that are meticulously "retold" in paintings, drawings and prints. The motifs fill the entire pictorial plane, intense yet detached. Celmins strives to avoid symbolism, narrative and psychology. Her works capture the sense of time passing without anything actually happening. The desert, the sea and the sky are subjects she has been exploring for a long time. Vast natural landscapes without human presence – both liberating and overwhelming.
