- About the work
With the canvas laid bare, he lets the pale colour cast a shadow across the face and hair, lightly tracing the shoulders and accentuating the chest. The woman our imagination inevitably conjures up from these masterly strokes is Misia Godebska, born in St Petersburg in 1872. Her beauty was celebrated in Paris at the turn of the 19th century, and she was portrayed not only by Vuillard but also by Toulouse-Lautrec, Bonnard and Renoir and Malarmé sang her praises. She was implicated in all the theatre scandals, from Jarry's Ubu Roi to the Russian Ballet's legendary performances. Brought up by her grandmother in Belgium, she sat in the lap of Franz Liszt as a child, while he played the piano. She herself was instructed by Gabriel Fauré.
