- About the work
A huge painting, and a very conventional work of art, which is a contradiction to a surrealist - a rebel against art and sense. A dream landscape and a monstrous creature; unstable, fragile, in the midst of his vigour. The deformed body is propped up with crutches and the watch - time - is melting. Dalí painted his image of the subconscious, basing himself on Sigmund Freud's sexually permeated dream theory. The freedom-fighter Tell is also a political figure, with face and cap culled from the communist leader Lenin. The work is also a rebellion against his own father. But, above all, Dalí claimed that the artist's task was to paint in riddles…
