About the artworkBritish artist Alan Uglow moved to New York in 1969, where he worked for more than four decades exploring a strongly reductive style of painting. Vertical and horizontal stripes define rectangular, white surfaces reminding us of Mondrian’s compositions, but Uglow’s main influence was the sculptor Giacometti and his ability to create space and presence. Another of Uglow’s lifelong passions was football. Alan Uglow made photo suites of football stadiums and was fascinated by these confined universes. A painting such as Standard III is no mere depiction of a football pitch. And yet, the white field lines and this painting have a great deal in common. They create order and form the background and premise for something to take place according to certain rules.
