About the artwork
The author Ulla Bjerne was a merchant’s daughter from Söderhamn who socialized with intellectuals from all over the world in Paris in the 1910s. Ulla Bjerne frequented La Rotonde dressed like a man, in cravat and jacket. The boy-girl – the garçonne – was born. She published her novels under the pen-names of Lars Doll and Don Pedro. The fashion-conscious Isaac Grünewald emphasizes Ulla Bjerne’s androgynous attitude. She stands comfortably leaned back with her dainty shoes planted wide apart, hips jutting forward and her hands in her pockets. The combination of a suit and a feminine waistcoat, enhancing her waist, underlines the look.
