About the artworkFilms, words and phrases are crucial in Ed Ruscha’s work. When he moved to Los Angeles in 1956, the city and its illusions became part of his art. Ruscha makes word-based paintings that play with surface and depth. He is fascinated by the power of language, with its many ambiguities. The words in this work and the cinemascope dimensions of the canvas suggest the end credits of old movies, where the physical film strip is scratched. The Gothic typeface conjures up newspapers and Latin gang culture. The End could allude to the end of a cinematic golden era, or perhaps of a society founded on the rule of law. In his youth, Ruscha worked with printers and has experimented with his typesetting skills throughout his career – art in the information age, he calls it.
