About the artwork
Steps is composed of rectangular shapes. It resembles an aerial photo of farmland. Unlike the abstract, geometric works by other artists from this period, the lines in this painting are blurred and wavering, and the colours are neither clear nor bright. The squares are a bit crooked. It looks like the watercolour was applied and then washed off, or so diluted that the pigment has run off. Klee often found inspiration on his travels. The warm hues in Steps were influenced by his experiences in Egypt in the winter of 1928–1929.
