About the artworkMartin Emond combined many different roles in his life - he lived and worked as a proletariat artist but also managed the dress department of his family's ladies' garment factory in Landskrona until his death. His expressionistically-influenced paintings portray everyday life. "All art that has moved us onwards has been personal, not programmatic." Emond, who grew up in southern Sweden, did not go to Paris like many other artists, but to Berlin, where he found the setting for the painting Variety Cafe at Closing Time. This is a dreary scene, a rendering of "the hopelessness that pervaded the city so strongly." The artist describes the minutes before closing time, with a few lingering guests and thick clouds of cigar smoke.
