About the artworkBror Hjorth's sculpted human figures are both massive and sensual. They emerge from the marble slab, where the unprocessed portions emphasise the force of the embrace. The smooth stone surface suggests the feeling of soft skin. To the primitivist artist Hjorth, physical love represented life-force and vitality. In 1935, when he showed his love groups at Galleri Färg och Form, he was reported to the vice squad and had to remove four works from the exhibition. The person who reported him claimed the sculptures were pornographic. The ensuing heated debate drew crowds of curious visitors to the gallery. There were voices in Sweden, too, demanding that what the Nazis called entartete Kunst be banished from the public domain.
