About the artwork
15 paintings combined. “The bearableness of the individual work” (die Erträglichkeit des einzelnen Werks) is written above two of the canvases, where the figures fail to look in the direction of the text. What is “right” becomes a question of perspective. This playful twisting and turning of images and ideas is typical of Majerus. Figures drawn from television, comic and computer games mix with painterly gestures and art historical allusion. All of them coexisting without internal hierarchies. Majerus belonged to a generation of politically aware artists who were drawn to Berlin after the Wall came down. His career got going just as the Internet arrived. New computer-based editing tools set their stamp on the art of the age and its visual culture. Two years after Gewinn was painted Majerus died in a plane crash aged only 35.
