About the artworkThis portrait of Nils Santesson was painted by Ivan Lönnberg, who had moved to Paris to share an apartment and studio with his friend. Santesson had been sentenced for “homosexual crimes” in Sweden and left the country when he was released from prison. France was one of the few countries where same-sex relations were not against the law. Three of Lönnberg’s self-portraits can be seen in the studio interior. Studios often served as subversive and safe places for marginalised groups, where identities could be explored and formulated. Lönnberg’s works have strong similarities with the naivist style of his friend Nils Dardel at the time. Along with the art dealers Wilhelm Uhde and Alfred Flechtheim and Rolf de Maré of the Ballets Suédois, they belonged to a network that rejected the prevailing norms.
