Word / World

Rivane Neuenschwander was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and gained her MA at the Royal College of Art in London in 1998. She works with a broad range of techniques, subjects and methods such as film, photography and co-creative installations. Neuenschwander has explored areas such as the paths of communication and the contrasts that exist between different organisational systems. In Word/World (a collaboration with Cao Guimarães) ants are filmed as they drag tiny pieces of paper along that will be used for building their colony. On the pieces of paper two human signs have been placed: the glosses word and world. The viewer is given a chance to share the ants’ point of view through the powerful magnifying lens employed.
