Two human shapes appear outside a beach cabana, separated by a ball, lit by sharp sun beams. One of the figures seems to be unlocking the hut with a key. Picasso painted this work while on vacation with his family in Dinard, a well-known resort on the Brittany coast of France. The other sunbathers are studying the couple by the cabana attentively – or are they looking for the ball.The key is a recurring theme in Picasso’s work, closely tied to his inner being and subconscious. Perhaps there is a rendez-vous between lovers about to take place in the cabana?
