About the artworkIn Written Language, Sophie Tottie explores
the relationship between systems and deviation
through a repetitive process. In these large drawings
each line is drawn by hand in ink, following
and reinforcing the small irregularities of the
previous line. The result is a wave-like, abstract
pattern that emphasises the unpredictability inherent
in the creative process. Tottie references
abstract and minimalist art but translates its
forms of expression into a physical act that unites
the movement
of the body with the processes of
the mind. The repeated lines, which can resemble
geological sediments or seismic traces, contain
both errors and deviations, giving the work its
unique expression and meaning.
