About the artworkCady Noland delves deep into the American psyche, with collages, sculptures and installations that explore the widespread US fascination for celebrities, violence and psychopaths. In form, “Untitled” resembles a minimalist or post-minimalist sculpture, but the removal of some of the circles punched in the aluminium-sprayed cardboard turns it into a pillory, a mediaeval instrument used to hold and shame people in public. This is connected to Noland’s scrutiny of dysfunctionality in American culture, as exemplified by over-filled prisons, TV-broadcast trials, and the constant consumption of human suffering and degradation for the purpose of entertainment.
