About the artworkMoving across the floor work “Days and Ages” is like a voyage on the Mediterranean. The terracotta tiles are made of sea water and clay from the artist’s home town of Limassol on Cyprus. At the Museum, the clay meets Swedish materials such as birch, oak and limestone. The title refers to the archaeologist Einar Gjerstad’s “Ages and Days in Cyprus”, a memoir of the Swedish Cyprus Expedition, which conducted wide-ranging excavations on Cyprus between 1927 and 1931. The finds from Gjerstad’s expedition, mainly terracotta figures, were shared with the British colonial Empire. Half was shipped to Sweden, and the “Cyprus collection” is now in the Medelhavsmuseet in Stockholm. Panayiotou highlights how archaeology underpins the nation state, and how national symbols and natural resources contribute to making national identity.
