About the artwork
When Man Ray arrived in Paris in 1921, his friendship with Marcel Duchamp soon brought him into the circle of artists in the Dada and Surrealist movements. During the war, he returned to the USA and arrived in Hollywood in 1940. He had been forced to leave most of his work behind in Paris and, in order to show his art to a new audience in the United States, he recreated some of his old objects, often from photographs. Objects of My Affection became the collective name. In 1944, he compiled an album with the same title, containing specially selected photographs of objects, paintings and interiors. For each picture he wrote his own commentary – subtle and often ambiguous. This poetic book is an enigmatic summary of the most important elements of Man Ray’s oeuvre.
