About the artworkHalf circles of white streaks, perhaps the beams from the car headlights, pulsate rhythmically across the canvas. The round shapes indicate the motion of the wheels. The overall impression is of speed and noise. We can almost feel the wind and the smell of exhaust fumes. In the eyes of the futurists, the automobile was more beautiful than any antique sculpture. It represented energy, modernity and dynamism, and encompassed the whole new era, the city and modern life. The futurist manifesto written by Filippo Marinetti in 1909 even sang the praises of war, and some members of the movement collaborated with Mussolini.
