About the artworkIn the interwar period after the end of the dark, chaotic First World War, a new radical architecture began to unfold. The ideal was to reflect the spirit of the new era, and many architects rejected unnecessary decor and ornaments that alluded to the past. Architecture grew geometric and abstract, with clinical, white walls and panorama windows. It emerged in harmony with influences from visual arts, as exemplified in the works of the architect Le Corbusier. He painted and sculpted throughout life, and it is hard to imagine his architectural designs without the links to modern painting. His ideas spread through lectures, and essays in magazines and books – including Après le cubisme (After Cubism), which he wrote together with the painter Amédée Ozenfant.
