About the artworkThe experimental filmmaker Gunvor Nelson was a pioneer of "New American Cinema". She moved to San Francisco in the 1950s, where she taught film studies for many years at the legendary San Francisco Art Institute. Gunvor Nelson’s earliest films are humorous yet sharply critical explorations of the stereotypical images of femininity in the media. Today, the films "Take Off" and "Schmeerguntz", made together with the American filmmaker Dorothy Wiley, are regarded as milestones in feminist cinematic history. "Schmeerguntz" mixes clips from beauty pageants with close-ups from a woman’s daily life of cleaning and changing nappies. The idea behind this collage was to portray the contrast between women’s reality and the idealised image broadcast by American TV.
