About the artworkFast, expressive brush strokes on a raw canvas - traces of an artist's temperament - tie Slow Fields to the individualistic style of abstract expressionism. But a paintbrush is hanging matter-of-factly on a hook in the right-hand corner: the tool of painting. The lettering draws our attention to the relationship between language and image: "red", "yellow", "blue" - should it be seen or read? We can choose either, and this links Johns to the 1970s conceptual artists. Jasper Johns has often been mentioned as a predecessor of Pop Art.
