About the artworkThis picture of a pointing hand was made in 1964 as a poster illustration for Moderna Museet’s exhibition American Pop Art: 106 Forms of Love and Despair. This exhibition was pivotal to a generation of Swedish artists who braced pop art and made it their own. Roy Lichtenstein was a leading figure in the pop art movement that emerged in the 1960s. His imagery resembles that of comic books, and his paintings are
characterised by the halftone dots used for printing press images at the time. This lithograph was produced in 1973 for a portfolio of prints donated by American artists to raise funds for “The New York Collection for Stockholm”, an initiative to expand the Moderna Museet Collection with contemporary American art. The original ink drawing is on temporary loan from the Moderna Museet Collection.
