About the artworkYou have probably stumbled upon a forgotten shopping list left behind in a shopping basket at some point. Words, hastily jotted down in pencil, as a reminder of what needs to be bought to make everyday life work. Normally, a pencil writes text with a thickness matching the pencil’s tip, but in Lena Gustafsson’s list, the letters are drawn as volumes, as if written with a giant’s pencil. As though the words written are of immense importance. The list reads: corn porridge, fruit porridge with pear and banana, mild oatmeal. Do we need all these types of porridge, or is this list, in fact, a reminder that consumerism has spiralled out of control?
