About the artworkThomas Ruff both explores the nature of the photograph as witness to the truth and calls it into question. Here he has worked with an image downloaded from the Internet. JPEG is a standard format for compressing digital images. During compression the image is simplified and a lot of information is lost. When the image is then blown up on an enormous scale the resulting damage can be seen. The pixellated image reminds us that what we see in the media is not reality but digital reproductions of it that can be experienced and interpreted in different ways depending on how they are presented. Photographs may bear witness to an event but they are also at risk of being manipulated or of becoming a means for the mass media to pursue new sensations.
