Description
In 1878, Eadweard Muybridge took a series of photographs of a horse in motion. A businessman and horse-lover had commissioned Muybridge to perform a scientific photographic study of horse gaits to determine whether all four feet were off the ground at the same time while trotting. For the first time, using a line of cameras with shutters that were triggered as the horse ran past, it was possible for the human eye to see that all hooves were airborne at one point. These pictures were followed by many studies of animals and humans in motion, and this new visual knowledge was used frequently by artists at the time, including Giacomo Balla.
