About the artworkWith a mixture of humour and skepticism Enno Hallek plays with a plethora of artistic impulses - kitsch painting, pop art, Kandinsky's colour theories, Estonian folk art, sunsets and vivid rainbow colours. Enno Hallek has always stayed clear of the abstract modernism that dominated art in the 1950s when he was an art student. His art is never stylistically pure. It is populated with personal memories and narratives. Enno Hallek came from Estonia with his family in a boat across the Baltic in 1943. My Oars from Estonia are painted in all the colours of the rainbow. The unpainted oar is a blank page. Together with the annual rings, the old oars, worn by rowing hands, illustrate the time that has passed.
