About the artworkFelix Gmelin’s video work from 2002 is based on the German filmmaker Gerd Conradt’s “Farbtest - Die Rote Fahne” from 1968. Conradt’s film shows students running in the streets of West Berlin in 1968, holding a red flag. The artist’s father was among these students. Gmelin re-enacts the situation with students running with a red flag, but the scene is Stockholm in 2002. What does this action – and the red flag – represent 30 years later? With subtle visual means, Gmelin examines political image symbolism and utopias. By comparing the political tendencies in the late 1960s with activism in the 2000s, he reflects the significance and presence of history in society today, and adds further complexity to the political discourse.
