About the artworkEva Aeppli was in her teens during the Second World War, which had a profound influence on her as an artist. This despite being relatively protected from the atrocities of war by growing up in neutral Switzerland. Aeppli’s father was a teacher and co-founder of the anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner school where she received her basic education. After studying design in Basel, Aeppli sold the puppets she made herself, a craft she incorporated in her artistic practice. Later, and without affiliating herself to any artist group, she practised amid the most innovative art circles in Paris, fraternising with artists such as Daniel Spoerri, Yves Klein, Niki de Saint Phalle – and Jean Tinguely, who later became her first husband.
