About the artworkAs a sculptor and illustrator, Beth Laurin has often worked with contrasts: the soft against the hard, the restrictive and the liberating. In the drawing No 1, 1995–96, Laurin explores the relationship between the random and the controlled. Here she has drawn meticulously in pencil, yet it almost appears as if she has taken black paint on a brush and swept it across the paper in a swift motion, allowing the paint to flow over the surface. The work reflects an intellectual approach to the poetry of materials. Beth Laurin herself refers to her favourite author, Samuel Beckett, who speaks of the importance of failure as a necessary step towards success.
