About the artworkMascot was created for Moderna Museet’s exhibition Movement in Art in 1961. The rooms were filled by objects, all of which were mobile. All, except for this immobile male mannequin, tied securely to his chair. This playful sabotage is typical of Reuterswärd’s approach. He is best known for his sculpture of the revolver with a knotted barrel. There are several copies of it; one stands outside the headquarters of the United Nations in New York. However, before he made this sculpture, Reuterswärd had created the knotted pen – as a symbol of misunderstanding. According to Reuterswärd, instead of making the sculpture move, Mascot was intended to arouse movement in the mind of the beholder. The artist trusts viewers to get the joke on their own, a bit like silent movie star Buster Keaton, whose stone-face invites the beholder to contribute towards creating the work of art.
