About the artworkThe cubists explored new ways of representing three-dimensional reality on a flat canvas. Cubist sculpture may sound like a contradiction, since sculpture is three-dimensional anyway. Here, Picasso has analysed the volumes of a head as if he were making a painting. Fernande Olivier, who modelled for this head, lived with Picasso in Horta de Sant Joan, where he developed his cubist idiom. Every angle of her head is expressively shaped, and the work is considered as one of the foremost cubist sculptures. Fernande was taller than Picasso, which might explain why the head is slightly tilted. A reproduction of Head of a Woman was published in Alfred Stieglitz’s magazine Camera Work, contributing thereby to spark a lively interest in European modernism in the USA.
