About the artworkFor her series Sverige/Schweden, Maria Miesenberger used photographs of calm, familiar family scenes found in her father's family album. Here we see a group of people on a picnic in the country. The original picture is idyllic, with the men in hats indicating the era. This must be the 1950s, at the height of the Swedish welfare state. But the picture is negative, and the figures have been fuzzily blacked out. Although this increases the universality of the picture - anyone could put themselves in the empty space - it also evokes censorship and absence. The scene is at once both frightening and familiar.
