About the artworkAt an early stage in his oeuvre, Fautrier abandoned the illusion that art can improve the world. His breakthrough came when his Hostage series, some thirty paintings including Multiple Head, was shown in Paris in 1945 after the war. He employed his own technique, enticing his figures to appear out of globs of distemper. The fact that they were painted during the war, while France was under German occupation, gave these tormented, deformed heads a special significance. But they are also timeless - "hieroglyphics of suffering", as the French writer André Malraux called them.
