About the artworkPablo Picasso was one of few artists who remained in Paris during the occupation in the Second World War. The Nazis called his art “degenerate” and banned him from exhibiting. Picasso, who was a classically trained artist, resumed sculpting for the first time in many years. Sculpture allowed him to make playful experiments. Bronze was reserved for the war effort, and all art casting was prohibited. So, Picasso took his sculptures to the foundry at night. Using the traditional material became an act of resistance. When Paris was liberated, Picasso could again travel in the Mediterranean region, where his encounters with the sculptures and idols of antiquity inspired him to make a few smaller bronzes.
