About the artworkIt has been said that Picasso could draw before he could talk. His mother jotted down his first words: "piz, piz", the child's attempt to say "lapiz", pencil. He seems to know what he wants from the very beginning: "I do not seek, I find."
He desires and touches, moving from instinct to skill. With the strength of his arm and the sensitivity of his hand he moves from thought to word, from sight to picture: the right word shows that he has understood, the right movement of the hand that it has understood the brain. In the struggle to make the world his own he uses shapes and figures. The same ones over and over again until they become part of his experience. In 1919 - he had by then been an established artist for 20 years - he made the first portrait of his hands. Expressive tools for thoughts, links to the body. Grasp and understand: his intelligence was physical, the touch of his hands a report to his brain, his thoughts a part of his body.
The sculpture The Arm was made 29 years later. Picasso is now 77 and is about to buy a chateau at the foot of Mont Sainte-Victoire, Paul Cézanne's mountain, near Aix-en-Provence. And - for the umpteenth time - he is at the threshold of a new phase in his feverish creativity: variations on Eduard Manet's Déjeuner sur l'herbe. His hand, his arm, is as powerful as ever. It is raised in greeting and it says "I am Picasso."
"When I have something to say, I do it in the most natural way I know."
