About the artworkThe Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti's father was a painter, but it was not until his first trip to Paris that Alberto began to work with sculpture. To begin with, during the first half of the Twenties, he was a pupil of Bourdelle, and created his modernistic works in a more or less Cubist idiom.  In the Thirties he produced his Surrealist sculptures of objects - at that time he was close to the artist Meret Oppenheim - and during the following decades he developed his typical figurative style, with the tall, thin figures that made him famous.
Group of Three Men is a situation picture. The plinth shows that the market square/field that the three men are walking on is as important as the figures themselves. All three men are walking in different directions, and it is the platform that makes their meeting possible. But in fact they don't seem to have any real contact with each other. It is the special moment when their paths cross that is the artist's subject.
