About the artworkTowards the end of the 1970s, Barbro Bäckström's works made of wire net grew increasingly abstract. The characteristic bodies were substituted by objects that hovered between abstraction, nature and metaphor. Her fascination for formulating subtle shifts between condensation and dispersion remained, however. Bearing - Borne (Memory) is installed directly on the floor and suspended from the ceiling, and is part of a series inspired by non-European ritual objects.
Bäckström's choice of materials reveals a delight in experimentation coupled with great sensitivity. She often used industrial materials - concrete, plastic, asphalt, corten steel. Her materials do not refer to nature, but to 1960s urban reality, with its impersonal tone and mass-production.
