About the artwork
During her short but highly influential career, Eva Hesse produced a groundbreaking body of work that shifted the terms of engagement with sculpture. Hesse increasingly insisted on sculpture being non-representational, creating an object that engaged the viewer on its own material and spatial conditions. In the artist’s own words, to get to "non art, non connotive [sic], non anthropomorphic, non geometric, non, nothing, everything, but of another kind, vision, sort". The malleable nature of the tubes used in this suspended composition imbues the work with an indeterminate quality – a drawing in the air that highlights Hesse’s use of the circle as related to time, as "a sequence of change and maturation".
