About the artworkElli Hemberg developed artistically from figurative to abstract works. The formal problems are the central concern. Otto G Carlsund discovered this, and he exhibited together with Hemberg in the 1940s. Hemberg worked with both painting and sculpture. In 1969, she attended a course in metalwork, and this was the starting point for a number of larger works in sheet metal. In 1970, aged 74, she completed her first monumental work. In Model for a Monumental Sculpture the play of light and shadow makes the white appear anything but monochrome. The shifts create a tension. To experience a monumental sculpture by Hemberg, visit Rålambshovsparken in Stockholm, where her sculpture The Butterfly has been standing since 1980.
