About the artworkMax Ernst was a forerunner in Surrealism, known for experimenting with techniques that used chance as a tool to reveal hidden images from the subconscious. In 1927, Ernst developed grattage as a technique in painting. Objects such as pieces of wood, wire mesh, glass shards and string are placed under a canvas or cardboard painted with several layers of colour. The canvas is scraped over the objects with a palette knife or spatula, removing individual layers of paint. The textures are revealed through the still-dry paint, but the characteristics of the underlying objects are lost. The textures achieved in this way are then further transformed in the working process. They become forests, shell flowers, birds, sundials and petrified cities.
