About the artworkJulia Diament was born in Konskowola, a small Jewish town in Poland. She grew up in a nation racked by unrest. In the 1930s, she went to Belgium to study to be a journalist, and also studied photography there. When Germany attacked Belgium, she moved to Marseille, where she established herself as a photographer. The pictures she took there during the rebellion in 1944 have been used widely by news agencies and provide crucial documentation of the liberation of France in the Second World War. Pirotte’s images capture not only the resistance but also the arrival of the allies and the exhumations of those who died in the struggles.
