About the artworkEllen Roosval started sculpting late in life. Her teachers include Carl Milles. The reviews were mixed when she had her first exhibition in 1923 in Stockholm, at the age of 56. Her background was not in her favour: Born Hallwyl, the wife of Henrik de Maré, mother of Rolf de Maré, she caused a scandal by divorcing him to marry the art historian Johnny Roosval. In her alternately compact and closed, or floating, light, sculptures she expresses inspiration from disparate sources such as Indian and Assyrian art and the European middle ages. Myth and religion meet and mix in an entirely idiosyncratic way.
