About the artworkThe lifelong project of Bernd and Hilla Becher to document industrial landscapes in Europe and North America has accorded them a prominent position in photography. The European industrial landscape went through dramatic changes at the end of the 1950s. The Bechers photographed water towers, gasometers and other kinds of industrial buildings that were about to disappear. By systematically arranging their images according to the functions of the various buildings, the principles underlying their construction and their appearance they began to create a visual world of their own which was just as much conceptual art as it was documentary record. As teachers at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf Bernd and Hilla Becher would exert considerable influence on leading German photographers such as Andreas Gursky, Candida Höfer and Thomas Ruff.
