About the artworkAfter being profoundly influenced by a major memorial exhibition of Paul Cézanne in Paris in 1907, Georges Braque gave up his rich, fauvist palette for more subdued hues to emphasise form rather than colour. In spring 1908, Braque and Pablo Picasso embarked on a close artistic dialogue that soon gave rise to cubism. The still life became a popular theme among cubists, as it is based on familiar and ordinary things that could be made abstract. The fruits in “The Fruit Bowl” fill the entire canvas; the bowl spreads to the extent that it is hard to envision the physical space it exists in, which is exactly what Braque was after. In this way, Braque dissolves the perspective that he always claimed was false in relation to reality.
