About the artworkThe street in “View of Exchange Place, New York” from the finance district on Manhattan is like a deep canyon. The dramatic cropping of the 20x25 cm negative enhances the effect. Berenice Abbott’s New York photographs alternate between dizzying worm’s-eye and bird’s-eye perspectives, and more cubist compositions. In the cubist-inspired imagery, the urban elements are forged into a flattened unity of road signs, streets and architectural features. In the 1930s, Abbott documented the New York architecture, in the spirit of Eugène Atget, who photographed Paris around 1900. She had met Atget in Paris in the 1920s and managed his estate in order to save his photographs for posterity.
